(SEE ARTICLE ABOUT THIS PROJECT IN MAR/APR 2004 ISSUE OF "TRADITIONAL BUILDINGS" PG 16) Before "Remember the Alamo", "Remember Goliad" was the battle cry of the Texas Revolution honoring Col. James W. Fannin Jr. and the 342 men who were masacred at Goliad on Palm Sunday morning, March 27, 1836 in violation of honorable terms upon which they had laid down their arms. Fannin Plaza, the city park at S. Market and Franklin Streets, includes memorials of the Texas Revolution and several historical markers. Nearby is "hanging tree" on the courthouse lawn. The historic Goliad County Courthouse was completed in August 1894, but was later destroyed by high winds and fell into disrepair. With the financial help of the Texas Historical Commission, this historic building was restored to its former beauty with all the advantages of modern engineering and construction codes. The Rededication took place December 4, 2003. Munns Manufacturing was selected to construct the clock tower and the surrounding four cupolas. Using the latest technics in architecual sheet metal fabrication and custom ornamentation, the historic structure was restored to its former majesty and beauty. Over 10,100 man-hours were put into the project using approximately 52,000 lbs of material.
